Palm Bay Moose: "How About Shuttin' Up?"

You know, sometimes your mouth can get you in a lot of trouble. I don’t mean you, I actually meant me.

As an entertainer, you are always looking for that one-liner punch that brings the house down. Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you wish you could do an instant rewind and erase what you just said.

We were playing at the Palm Bay Moose lodge on this particular Saturday night. The area where we played was rather small with a small dance area surrounded by tables. We had had a good crowd earlier, but now it was getting later and the crowd had thinned out.

We always ask for request when we are playing. One reason is to please our fans with their favorite tunes, but another is to find out the type of music the crowd is favoring.

Throughout the night we had asked for request from the audience. This one man would say, “How about…..(this one” then a few minutes later he was say “How about…(that one)”….then “How about ….(another one)”. All of which we didn’t know.

Finally, he said, “How about” and before he could finish, I said, “How about shuttin’ up !”

Now, I know that was probably really rude but in all honesty, I thought it would be funny. You know, both sentences starting out with “How about…” It just seemed to be funny to me.

Oh, if I had only known how I would have to pay for that one little comment.

As it turned out, we became very good friends with the man and his wife. They have followed us for many, many years and are still great friends to this day.

However, if he has told one person about that night, he had told a thousand. Each time it starts, “Did I ever tell you about the first time we met Larry & Sandi?” I’m sure this story won’t stop me from saying something stupid, but I haven’t told anyone to shut up since. However, if he tells one more person about that story, I might consider it.

Just kidding. (You know who you are.)
