When we first went to work at the Royal Motor Lodge (Back Door Lounge), the owners were from West Virginia.
After a while the partners decided to sell the property. The property would eventually be sold more than once, but this time a couple became the new owners.
Why is it, when someone buys a flourishing business, the first thing they want to do is change things? I guess they decided they wanted all the control and since Larry and I had been managing the lounge for years, they wanted that control too.
I guess I probably would do the same if in that situation. We tried to oblige them with their request. But I guess they just didn’t like us. They wanted to change everything, including the diner located in front of the lounge.
Things were getting frustrating for us, as well as the customers. One night Larry and I came to work to find a paper dinner napkin pinned to the door of the stockroom informing us we had been terminated. How classy is that?
Well, I was pretty upset. Larry was hopping mad. We decided not to work that night. I can’t remember ever deliberately not working a job, but that’s what we did that night. We took a drive, stopped at some other clubs and took some time to think about what had happened.
We played out the rest of the week and left the Back Door. We went to work at the Kismet Restaurant and Lounge.
Well….what they didn’t know is the majority of our huge following did exactly that….followed us! The new owners were short lived and the property was sold again.
