The Back Door Days: Knife Thrower

There are all kinds of people in this world. It seems a lounge is where you can find a big variety.

The Back Door was not considered a “rough” place although there were a few incidents that happened that could have gone really bad. Thankfully, this particular evening, someone was watching over us.

Some of our customers were known to cause trouble after consuming beverages for hours. This one particular customer was a local car salesman. Many of the car dealers were located along US1 which made the Backdoor as well as other clubs along the highway, easy meeting places.

This one evening this salesman and another man were sitting at a table just to the right of the stage. We have always performed with Larry on the left and me on the right. I noticed the two guys to my right and came to realize they must have been there since Happy Hour.

We played a few songs and everyone was dancing and having a good time. The next thing I know, the guy that was sitting with the car salesman stood up and jammed a switchblade knife into the top of the table.

We stopped playing and Larry was off the stage in an instant. Now, you know I’m looking fast-forward right about now and I can’t see this ending well. I know this car salesman has been in trouble before and I didn’t know the other guy, but since he’s the one with the knife, I’m thinking he might be trouble too.

Larry talked to the car salesman and told him we couldn’t have that guy with a knife in there. He would have to leave. The doorman came over, the bartender came over, and between all of them they were able to convince them to leave.

We never found out what prompted the guy to stab the knife into the table. To my knowledge, he never came back to the Backdoor. It all ended well, but for a few moments, I was a little worried.

Well, back to singing and having a good time.
