Well, this was another one of those rare concerts with celebrities.
Larry and I were asked join a local country band help open an up-coming country show featuring Bobby Bare. We were excited about being asked to open for this country legend. We were almost too excited.
Well I was too excited. I was scared to death. So nervous, I ended up in the doctor’s office the day before the concert. I wasn’t sure I would be able to go through with the job. Severe stomach pain was about to keep me from being able to sing.
After explaining to my doctor what was going on, we decided it was just a bad case of stage fright. He gave me some medicine for my stomach and told me to just go out there and sing as if I were on the stage in the lounge. I was still nervous.
We were on the stage waiting for the curtain to open when Larry realized he had gum in his mouth. He said, “what am I gonna do? I can’t sing with gum in my mouth.” I said, “ I guess you’ll just have to swallow it.”
About that time the curtain opened. The music started and we started our first song. When we finished the song and the band prepared for the next song, Larry welcomed the crowd and began to tell them how nervous I was. Well that was just great, now everybody knows how nervous I had been about singing in front of a big crowd. So I decided to attempt humor. He went on and on about me being nervous, so I just said “ I’m not the one who swallowed my gum.”
The crowd laughed and we went on to the next song. (Twenty five years later we ran into a guy at the Omelet Shop who reminded us of the incident and asked Larry if he still swallows his gum.)
After the concert we went to the English Pub for dinner. Guess who is there? Bobby Bare ! We walked over to say hello and tell him how much we enjoyed opening the show for him. He barely spoke to us. Oh well, we loved the experience anyway.
This would not be the last time we would deal with a celebrity.
