There will be countless stories told about the “Back Door”.
It was a comfortable place to go and meet friends and relax. There were great bartenders to mix up your favorite drinks, great waitresses to serve them, great entertainment and yes, great bouncers to escort you out if need be.
One incident in particular comes to mind. We had a bouncer at this particular time that had a reputation of being a “ladies man”. All the ladies were after him. Although he enjoyed the attention, this one night let’s just say, “He had his hands full”.
I think it was a Friday night, the crowd was humming. Since we started playing at 5:00 pm, by 10:30 or 11:00 some folks could be feeling no pain. The dance floor was jammed and everyone was having a great time.
Of course, being on the stage, we had an advantage of watching the entire bar. The bouncer, or door-man, as we preferred to call him, knew to watch for our signal if we saw something that needed his attention.
There was a lady who had been having a little too much fun, and she was having trouble navigating. (Why is it, when people can’t stand up, that’s exactly what they try to do.)
Anyway, this lady insisted on staying on the dance floor. Finally, she could no longer stand on her own, so she kind of slumped to the floor. This is in the 70’s folks, when “tube tops” were popular. To her dismay, and her dance partner’s, when she slumped, so did the top. Her partner just walked away as if nothing happened.
There she was….hanging out on the dance floor…literally. We signaled for the door-man to come and help her up. He could not help but notice; she had had a wardrobe malfunction. He was trying to be a gentleman and help her up, but did not want to expose her to the rest of the lounge, so he attempted to pull the top up. She began to wake up a little. Of course, she thought he was trying to pull the top DOWN, so she began to fight him. He struggled with her, all the while trying to fix her fall-out situation as he guided her to the door.
He finally got her outside. When he returned, he received a round of applause.
