The Back Door Days

After our return to the Back Door from the Bali-Hai, we were having some great times. The word was out that the Back Door was the place to go.

Larry was still working at Harris during the day and playing music at night. I was staying at home with our daughter, Trish.

I remember our first night playing at the Back Door. Trish was just learning to walk. She fell and busted her lip. Of course, I was worried about her, having to leave her with this big fat lip. But everything was fine, thank God for Grandparents. We were so fortunate to have my parents watch our kids for us while we played music.

Our evening would start with the trip from Grant (where we lived at the time) to West Melbourne where my parents lived. Then to US1 to work until 3:00 am. At 3:00 am we drove to West Melbourne to get Trish, then back to Grant.

I don’t know how many of you remember what it’s like when you wake up a 1 year old at 3:00 in the morning after they have been asleep since 8:00 pm. They are ready to PLAY ! Great, just what I wanted to do after working all night. There have been many naps taken lying on the floor of Trish’s room with the door closed so she can’t get out.

Larry had to get up to go to work, so I would let him sleep. Those were great times, even though we didn’t get much sleep.

I remember one incident when I had been up all night with Trish the night before because she was sick. I was really tired. We were playing along during the night and suddenly Larry said, “What are you doing?” I guess I had drifted off to sleep right in the middle of the Elvis Medley. I was still playing but I don’t remember finishing the song. Needless to say, we had to take a short break. You know that feeling when you are no longer in control of your eyelids. You think you can stay awake, but the next thing you know you are waking up!
