The First Job

Several people in my office wanted to have a party. They rented the Rhodes Park Hall and passed the word around about the party.

They knew that Larry and I had been singing together so they decided we should be the entertainment for the party. Larry decided it should be just the two of us instead of the others that sometimes jammed together.

I can’t tell you how nervous I was about the whole thing. Playing at home with friends and family is one thing but singing in front of a lot of people was a whole other ball game. Larry had played in bands before and he had also been a solo act when he lived in West Palm Beach. So, it was not that big of a deal for him.

We had not really developed any kind of show or anything. We had a couple of guitars and a drum machine.

Larry had a stool with a wooden box to rest his feet. He had his name painted on the front of the box. The night of the party, he surprised me with my own box with my name on the front. Guess what? We just came up with the name of our group.

The party was a great success. We had a lot of fun, once the nerves settled a little. Our friends were so kind and told us what a great job we did.

Actually, the office party led us to another party. While Larry and I were getting set up for the party, we thought we would run through a few numbers to get a feel of the room. There were a group of people having a company cookout just outside the building. They heard us playing and came in to listen. They hired us for their Christmas party.

Then someone from that party hired us for another. We actually played three or four parties in that building when we first got started.

Shortly after we began playing parties, Larry and I were married.
