The Meeting

I suppose every couple has a story of how they met.

Little did we know that the subject that actually sparked our first conversation would lead to not only a long and happy marriage, but a very successful career.

I worked for Harris Corporation, which was originally called Radiation, Inc. At this time, Harris manufactured integrated circuits. These IC’s were manufactured for various customers and had to be tested to insure the circuits met the customer’s specifications.

I was one of the programmers in the department that wrote software for the machines that tested the integrated circuits. Larry worked as an engineer. The area where the testing was performed was called Final Test.

I was sitting at one of the test machines, loading a program and Larry walked by. He had on a bright Paisley tie. I don’t know if any of you remember Paisley, but it was a very “busy” pattern with lots of colors and you know…Paisleys. We looked at each other and smiled and I said “Nice tie.” His reply was, “That’s nothing, you should see my underwear!”

Well, I laughed, mainly because I couldn’t think of a good come-back. I kept thinking about his comment and I guess curiosity got the best of me… but wait, don’t get ahead of me. The same day, we met again in the computer room.

He noticed I had on earrings that were in the shape of little guitars. I hadn’t noticed before but his tie was held down with a guitar shaped tie clasp. (Probably because the tie was so “loud” I didn’t notice the clasp.) He said, “Why do you wear the guitar ear rings?” I said “I play guitar. Why are you wearing that guitar tie clasp?” He said “I play guitar too.”

He told me some of his history of playing in clubs in West Palm Beach and that he had been in a band in Viet Nam. I told him about some of my friends getting together and jamming and asked if he would like to join us sometime.

...... He did!
